Hero's Chronicles

Ursina’s very basic dungeon guide for the true beginner (does not include updates about basement)

(TL;DR)

GOAL

  • Find the treasure within 100 steps (unless the rule specific to that dungeon says otherwise) in a team of 3-5.
    • The dungeon is approximately 15×17 with semi-randomly placed walls, bosses, traps, healing rooms, prayer rooms, and treasure hints.
    • Treasure includes coins, items, and logs. A log is guaranteed twice per day but you may get lucky and get an unguaranteed log.
  • Decide on your goal and adjust as necessary:
    • Conserve charges? Allow heroes to wander until they hit treasure or boss hints. Guide them away from or around bosses and toward the treasure.
    • Conserve time? Take charge right away, take estimated guesses, and maintain control. Avoid bosses unless detours would take longer.
    • Balance charges and time? Use a mix of the two above.
    • Get more money or hunter achievements? Go track down bosses and beat them up!

BASICS

  • Sending to dungeon costs 50% gp and returns about 33% of your total hp.
  • Know the different types of dungeons. Know what the symbols on the map mean (listed at the end of this guide).
  • One person “drives” by sending directional voice commands (north, south, east, west) at 5% gp each.
    • Contradictory commands confuse the heroes so allow one person to drive. Two people sending the same command can override a third sending a different one. If no one drives, the heroes will wander randomly.
    • You do not need to send a command at every step. The heroes are likely to continue in the same direction as in the previous step, but if you are trying to avoid a trap or a boss, be safe and send a command.
  • Spend your gp wisely.
    • On the map: Non-directional voice commands do not work. Encourage can heal you or the whole team, or fail. Punish can hurt you or the whole team, or fail. Miracles can heal you or the whole team, or give you a bold item.
    • Fighting a boss: Actions are more likely to succeed during a boss fight than on the map so heal before the end of a fight. Miracles are not efficient for the gp spent, but can give you xp, damage the boss’s loot, or give you a hit twice, pray, and heal in one turn.
  • Ways to fail:
    • After 20 steps, you can exit without penalty by returning to the entrance.
    • You get kicked out without penalty if you fail to find the treasure by the 100th step (50 for Hurry dungeons).
    • You get kicked out without a penalty if you are the last remaining survivor. The others who did not survive get kicked out with a penalty of 50% of their coins.

SOME GENERAL STRATEGY

  • Install the UI+. In addition to its many other non-dungeon uses, it color codes the dungeon as you progress through it, provides the easiest way to avoid bosses, and narrows down possibilities for the location of the treasure.
  • Finding the treasure:
    • When you first enter and as you progress through the dungeon, estimate where you might be in relation to the four outer walls of the dungeon. The entrance is usually not directly next to an outer wall.
    • The treasure has about 50% chance of being 5-6 squares (not steps) diagonally from the entrance but can be as close as 3 and as far as 10 away from the entrance on either axis.
    • Follow the bosses. 1-skilled boss means you’re pretty far from the treasure. 2-skilled boss means you’re getting closer. 3-skilled boss means you’re probably 1-2 steps away from treasure. The boss guarding the treasure is called the Treasure Boss (TB) and is either adjacent to or directly diagonal from the treasure.
  • Avoiding bosses:
    • If you have a 50/50 chance of hitting a boss, estimate where the treasure might be and the boss is probably in the most direct path to that location. Take the other path for a better chance to avoid the boss.
    • There are usually traps around the treasure even if you manage to avoid the Treasure Boss, so heal up. Traps can take anywhere from ~10 to 100+ hp.
  • Know when to give up. If your team is dying or mostly dead, it might be better to drive back to the exit, or just let this one go and try again another time instead of wasting charges.

Geoff – There once was a bear named Urs / Whose coins were kept inside of a purse. / No money came out / When charged for her trout. / She growled, “It’s free or you’ll see the nurse.”

Arivelle – Ursina was a bear most skilled / Who was loved by all of her guild. / “I need hugs”, she sighed, / and hugs we applied, / and all that were there were fulfilled.

TaiJuan – There’s a goddess called Ursina / Who drives dungeons like a ballerina. / As she steers to and fro, / She stays on her toes, / Dodges TB then off to arena.

Brihtnoth A lovely young lass named Ursina / Was phenix-tired and wanted meaner (and possible wiener). / HM did invite her / And then soon un-right her / And also made her much obscener!

Sohail There was once a bear in Blue Feather, / Who used to beat up enemies and reduce them to pieces of leather. / She went on a journey, / In search of a tourney, / only to realize what she misses the most is the blether.

Sonnet by Brihtnoth:
Oh Ursina, that Cupid’s dart would strike
Thine heart, and bind that heart to me fore’er;
Thy virtues I’ll extol Spenser-alike:
A bear like thee no man will find nowhere.
Thy brown eyes strong and dark as coffee black;
Thy bear arms lethal’r than the NRA;
Thy fur so warm it’s even on your back;
And legs that put all man-bears in your sway.
In the arena I don’t dare to match
Thine furious strikes, as thou kill’st, to boot;
But with my D I hope that I thee match –
Oh how I wish dear Cupid would thee shoot:
For if thy love thou not bestow’st on me Cupid can be a bear fur devotee!

Cham Almighty O Great Random, hear our prayer / Send us a big ol’ Tubercolossus Not a Flowsnake, Oxydjinn / Or any of your tackier bosses Just as long Ursina gets / a decent part (not his proboscis)
