Hero's Chronicles

Note to self:

As we all know, in Bumchester (at milestone 10) I get less money for my loot; something happens in Lst Resort (20), but I’m not quite sure what*; in Beerburgh (30) I waste spend lots on booze; in Trollbridge (50) and Los Dos (70) – where potions are cheap – I spend less; in Monsterdam (90) I heal slowly; and in Tradeburg (100) my artifacts sell for more and I can buy gold bricks cheaper than anywhere else (though see what I have to say about Anville later). Los Ads (130) is a nightmare in almost every way and best avoided unless desperate, and San Sat (170) has excellent equipment.

I left the new town of Herowin at ms 60 with only 82 coins, having arrived with much more than that, and a heavy loot bag…I didn’t spend my gold wisely – my goddess isn’t impressed.

I’ve made it out to Godvillewood (210) a couple of times and think that I don’t get a load of money, but nor do I spend much (except possibly on donations to my goddess — which she likes, as it makes her stronger). *My infrequent visits to Last Resort have made a similar impression, helped by the fact that donations to my goddess have double the effect.

My epic quests have taken me to Herolympus – at milestone 250 – which reminded me of Trollbridge; Dogville (ms 300) where the traders were rather stingy and potions expensive; and Anville (350), where I seem to buy bricks very cheaply quite often, but rarely buy potions, and when I do they’re quite expensive.

On my second epic quest I travelled the 500 miles to Deville for the first time – my artifacts seemed to sell for a reasonable price, and I didn’t spend much (but didn’t buy any potions).

I found the new town of Lostway out at milestone 660 (some people have found it at 695, maybe it moves?!) – it took me a long time to heal there, but the traders paid generous prices (though I didn’t buy any potions). I upgraded a skill – leaving me with 99 coins – then put 15% of my remaining gold into my retirement fund as my diary shows: “No more frivolous spending! I’d better stash 15 gold coins for the future.”

My Lady has noticed that epics will happen every 20th quest once 100 normal ones have been completed. She’s been told that if your pet is dead when you’re due to get an epic quest you’ll skip it – she has no idea whether that still applies with the new unconscious pets, though she thinks that it’s rather likely.

Talking of which, she’d like to remind me that unconscious pets can be revived in any town, as long as there is enough gold available for the priests (around 450 coins per pet level).

Memorable Days

On day 790 g.e. I acquired 8, that’s eight, bricks for my Lady’s temple…She’s very pleased, especially as the previous day’s pickings were very slim indeed (only 1, that’s one, brick in 24 hours) – the Great Random is certainly living up to its name.

A new brick and distance record! On 796 g.e. I collected 9 beautiful golden bricks for the temple, including one from a skirmish and 3 from my second epic quest, at the end of which I reached ms 589, the furthest I’ve travelled so far.

Day 826 g.e. was amazing, I collected 13 bricks (how crazy is that?) – including 8 melts (mostly from the proceeds of my third epic quest), one bought, a monster of the day, a quest, a skirmish (of which my Lady was not even aware until it was over), and one which I dug up (it’s very rare for me to dig at all), woo! – and I achieved level 42 (the answer to the ultimate question about life, the universe and everything, of course). My goddess is very proud (though she did communicate to me that she was originally a bit miffed that she had to buy charges for the first time to enable all the melts – which seem to have become more difficult recently – but is happy to support the devs… whatever all that might mean)!

The very next day I was featured in the Godville Times, which is very special: “Squiff – 42nd-level adventurer, member of the “Blue Feather” guild, with the motto “Oblee will oblige!”, stands at the 26th position in the pantheon of creation under the vigilant supervision of the goddess Oblee. She is deeply gratified by her place in the pantheon and is not planning to give it up any time soon.” Needless to say, my Lady is even more proud, and has encouraged me so much today that as I write I’m pure good! for the first time , though to be honest I think that had more to do with a reluctance for my coins to melt into bricks again than anything else!

835 g.e. I was nearing the end of my fourth epic quest when I sensed that my goddess was no longer there with me …I prayed and begged her not to forsake me, but nothing worked. Finally, in a pit of despair, I sacrificed two golden bricks in her name, which had the desired effect, miracle of miracles (she’s back anyway, something worked)! She’s wondering where the bricks went, but if you don’t tell her I panicked then I won’t – I’m pretending nothing happened. Now she’s back she’s also nonplussed about having to encourage me 18 times before a brick was melted when I had double the gold I needed for one. That will probably remain a mystery, cos I’ve no idea.

1057 g.e. (1st April 2013) Tribbles! They’re everywhere! “Someone thew a few tribbles into my loot bag. It’s sounds weird, but i can’t seem to get rid of them…” They won’t leave of their own accord “Darn tribbles won’t leave my loot bag! I think they’ve already built a habitat.”, the traders won’t buy them “Tried to sell tribbles to a trader, but he promptly refused. It almost feels like he has some tribbles as well…”, and I’m not exactly helping either – “The enemy tried to filch the tribble from my knapsack. It quietly put it back after I knocked out one of its teeth. ". My pet is making matters worse “Sven swallowed a tribble, then made a terrible face and spit out two. Well, thank you my friend… ", eep! And so they’re multiplying, as tribbles do – Tribble ( 6 7 8 10 11 12 14 15 16 17 21pcs)! “Darn where all these tribbles came from and why it’s getting more of them?..”…how will it end? This is how! “Finally found some fool who was able to save me from all these tribbles. I even managed to got 11497 gold coins for it!” Ah, thanks devs!

Diary entries which have particularly impressed my goddess

Made a wise investment with 1 coin in a local bank and… it’s gone.

Everyone was excited when Molotov’s Cocktail Bar announced free beer in honor of Blue Feather. By the time I got there, all they had left was the bill for 5 coins.

While at the hospital, I found Jovi lying in the infirmary. Spent 0 coins on get-well gifts, hoping she will return the favor one day.

Oblee will oblige!
