Hero's Chronicles

In a shadowy corner of a room shrouded in near darkness there sits a glossy black desk. An ornate book rests upon the desk and it glows with unseemly power. A cool wind blows in from the window left carelessly open and the heavy cover of the book falls upon the shiny surface of the desk. Creeping closer to it Scheredin realizes with dismay that it is the diary of his Goddess Noirin. Despite the cruel punishment she might rain down upon him he cannot help but begin to read….

Day #1

Today is such a boring day that I have begun a diary to jot down my thoughts regarding my newest idea to resolve my ennui. I shall create a great hero! What could be more perfect than a proud warrior who worships no one but me?

Day #2

I am truly exhausted. It took much more work and time than I expected to create a hero. I wanted to make a warrior unmatched in strength, cunning, and wit but I lacked many of the necessary ingredients. I have no doubt my hero will overcome any shortcomings that might result due to my… resourcefulness in working with what was at hand. Welcome to life my hero.. I shall name you Scheredin.

Day #3

I have decided that despite my well-earned reputation for darknesss, young Scheredin shall be treated with nothing but encouragement. My words shall be tender and supportive. My tone one of love and caring. Scheredin will look upon his Goddess as one of benevolence and the light within him will shine bright. Yes, I plan to mold his personality into pure good! No one has ever accused me of being afraid of a challenge!

Day #4

Scheredin is slowly adapting to his role as a hero. I have spent much time encouraging him although I do not seem to have a good handle on it. Many times my intentions to heal him have resulted in a field of flowers or some other such nonsense. Scheredin’s personality is now kind so my efforts are at least making some impact upon him. He has picked up some gear on his journey thus far but it seems to be of a detrimental nature. I can only hope that as the gold in his pockets increases he will be able to acquire things of better use. He has already picked up a gold brick to begin building a temple in my honor. I have no doubt he will be expeditious in his efforts to collect the rest.

Day #5

Drinking. My hero spends a great deal of time drinking. I believe he spends more gold on beer than he does on equipment. Not that his equipment purchases, few as they may be, are even worthwhile. Alas, I must cool my temper and encourage him. Perhaps he will strive to purchase the best a shop can offer instead of heading to the closest rubbish heap.

Day #6

The fool is drunk again. He spent all the gold in his pockets in the tavern. Amazingly enough he actually completed his first set of gear. Unfortunately it is all worthless junk best suited to a bumbling hobo. Not that it matters, Scheredin does nothing but drink in spite of the kindness of his Goddess and her belief that he can be a great hero. He stumbled into his first duel today. He lost of course. All my efforts to assist against his neutral opponent were in vain. Neutral. What an odd personality for a hero to have. What is his motivation to serve his God or Goddess? Why do I even care? I have enough troubles trying to help the fool worshipping me. My ‘hero’ is vexing me but somehow I must muster up some patience for dear Scheredin.

Day #7

I was unaware that alcoholism could lead to poor hearing but I shall have one of my minions look it up. My gentle encouragements have lifted Scheredin’s personality to one of righteousness. But the fool does not listen to one word I say when I take time away from my very busy Goddess schedule to send commands down to him. Scheredin blithely ignores me as he shuffles along hacking away at monsters with his wooden pitchfork (seriously, was this the only available weapon at the trader’s shop??) and wastes all his gold on drink. I am at a loss as to what action I should take. This hero is truly frustrating.

Day #7, Entry #2

Rarely would I even consider recording events in this diary more than once a day but I am so filled with rage that it was either put pen to paper or incinerate a tiny village of innocents. (Actually the quill caught my eye while I was shouting about the lack of small villages not yet ablaze..) The source of my rage? The young hero I foolishly created. He is the stupidest of creatures. I nourish him. He gets drunk. I send words of wisdom. He ignores them and then gets drunk. I encourage him. He buys ridiculous gear and then spends the bulk of his gear on drink. AND THEN THE IDIOT DIES. He then has the audacity to beg for a resurrection. I did not immediately respond to his request. Scheredin has certainly proven himself to be no hero despite my kindness. Perhaps he is best left to fend for himself and prove his worthiness for I have surely had quite enough of his stupidity.

..Scheredin stopped reading and slammed the thick book closed. The book whimpered in pain but Scheredin ignored its distress. He could not quite hold back the tears that flowed down his cheeks. His Goddess hated him. She believed him stupid and thought him not worthy of the title hero. Devastation quickly overtook him and he did not know if he could find the strength to continue. Straightening his shoulders like the hero he knew himself to be Scheredin mustered up the courage to reopen the book and read on…

.. I will resurrect the fool but I have had quite enough of this do-gooder kindness. It is truly a deception for Scheredin should know the full joy of his evil Goddess. There shall be no more encouragement. I shall mete out only punishment. Perhaps then he will take heed of my words.

Day #8

Things are progressing. I have thrown down punishment after punishment. Truly I have quite exhausted myself with my efforts to transform Scheredin from good to evil. To my surprise my punishments rarely go astray. They result in great energy in battle for my young hero and even on occasion smite his foe. A time or two they have even healed Scheredin! Of course a bolt or two did land upon a hapless tree but I am not the one that landscaped Godville in the first place so surely I cannot be blamed. Scheredin’s drinking remains a constant but he is seemingly making more well thought out armor purchases. His latest additions are on the other side of the negative range. He even spends time in prayer and bestows upon me a few coins he has collected. This evening he participated in his second duel. It was very hard fought against a most worthy opponent but my young champion came out the victor. I shall dream sweet evil dreams this night.

Day #9

Evil. Evil. Evil. Scheredin is pure evil! He even finds himself high in the Pantheon of Destruction as I have become quite addicted to my punishments. My great hero is destroying monster after monster with my …. dare I say cheerful … assistance. He enters a town, sells his full bag of loot and then proceeds to the local store to add another shiny new piece of equipment to his collection. A visit to the tavern is still a high priority but much less gold finds itself in the hands of the barkeep. Finally before venturing back out he drops to his knees in prayer which results in more power for my eager and constant punishments.

I find his beer guzzling less bothersome today. Perhaps it is because Scheredin is so grateful to me he even finds the time when traveling to stop at shrines to offer prayers to my very worthy and surely most humble self. His brick pile has increased as well. I look forward to the great temple that will be built. My only regret is that I did not begin Scheredin on the path of darkness when he was first created. Now that my anger has subsided I take great amusement in reading his diary. My Scheredin may not win any battle of wits but he writes quite charmingly of his adventures. Though he has died twice more since his conversion to evil I quite happily restored his life, dusted him off, and once more thrust him into battle. Onward to Level 13!

Day #10

A most joyous day. Scheredin did indeed reach Level 13 and he continues to grow in his efforts to improve his equipment. I am well pleased by his progress. We did not partake of any duels today. We entered the mighty Arena but seemed unable to find a worthy opponent. Perhaps no one is willing to take on one so very evil as Scheredin. Diary, give me a moment to have a private cackle or two of joy! The biggest news of the day is that Scheredin has completed his lengthy quest to join a guild. I am sure it will prove most worthy of such a great hero and that Scheredin will benefit from joining other heroes that may offer him advice as he trudges forward in his efforts to please me.

..Scheredin closed the book once again but this time the action was a gentle one, a reverent one. A smile spread across his face and he quietly left the dark room and headed back out to please his Goddess. But first he was going to have a beer.
