October 25, 2011

I awoke in a strange town with no memories and no idea who I am, except a vague notion that I am supposed to serve a certain Lady sitting in front of a keyboard above the clouds.

A wandering sage kindly gave me a -10 Fig Leaf while muttering something about “public decency”. With the tattered leaf as my armor, I began my journey to vanquish evil from the world.

I used to hear a voice in my head commanding me to do things, but it’s been a while since I’ve heard it. I have always thought that it was my Goddess’ voice, but perhaps it was only a figment of my imagination?

I asked the town doctor if the voice was real, but he only gave me a knowingly look and refused to explain further. What about those messages in my alphabet soup, and those pieces of inscribed toast that fell from the sky? Could those have been hallucinations too?

I am convinced that the voice I used to hear in my head was only a figment of my imagination. After all, I haven’t heard it in many months now. I have only a faint memory left of what the voice was like. All those other heroes and heroines who keep saying their deities are real must be suffering from the same mental disorder that I had. Well, I’m glad I have been cured.

March 15, 2013

I’ve found a number of heroes and heroines who suffered from the same problem as I did – we all used to hear voices in our heads, but not any longer. We have consulted many psychiatrists, but all of them said it’s a “common condition around here”. We have since formed a support group and we now meet every Sunday at the tavern in Los Adminos. We’d heard that an omniscient supreme deity called the Godville Administrator sometimes drops by the tavern to get a beer. We hope to get an explanation from him regarding our problem, so we can have some closure.

June 30, 2013

I was on my way to the Los Adminos tavern for our usual support group meeting, when the voice I used to hear in my head suddenly returned, louder and clearer than ever.

“I’m back! Oh, I see you have gained a couple of levels while I was away. Well, that’s better than I had expected. And that dust bunny is a different one, isn’t it?” As the voice reverberated in my brain, a shiny medal appeared in my hand, with the inscription “Honored Renegade”. What is going on? Has my disorder returned? Is this medal a hallucination?

As I marveled over what had just happened, a shovel suddenly fell from the sky, missing me only by an inch. A note tied to the handle read, “Now take this shovel and dig me a golden brick.” I looked up at the sky in disbelief. Is this a hallucination too, or does my Goddess really exist? Was she trying to kill me?

The voice came booming again, interrupting my thoughts. “It’s been a long time but my aiming is still pretty good, isn’t it? Now dig. And when you’re done, pray to me because I need that GP back in case you dig up coins.” I decided to obey the voice and dig, just in case my Goddess really exists. To my surprise, I found a chest filled to the brim with gold coins.

While I dithered over whether to buy a golden brick or a round of beer for everyone in Los Adminos, the clouds abruptly parted and a beam of light shone upon me, instantly replacing my ailing liver with a new one. I also overheard a distant voice muttering something about “a waste of GP”, but I wasn’t sure what it meant, and really couldn’t care less in any case. I now had beer money and a brand new liver! All my birthday wishes had just been granted, and I was happy as a clam at high tide.

I looked up at the sky. It didn’t look any different, but somehow I could feel a presence above the clouds.

“Perhaps she does exist after all,” I thought to myself. I picked Sven up in my arms, and together we continued on our journey, comforted by the knowledge that perhaps someone was looking out for us.
