“Hazel, what is THAT?”
“What, this?” She held up a small rectangular silver object. It had a round dial in the center and several holes and a small screen that was currently blank. There was a wire connecting small earpieces to the object but Hazel never put them on her ears. “It’s my MD3 player. It has three demons in it that play music. They never seem to play the music that I tell them to record though.”
Don’t ask, I told myself. Don’t ask. “What music does it play?”
“Generally music that doesn’t in any way fit the situation I’m currently in.” She held the earbuds up to her ears. “Right now it’s playing Hello, I’m a Truck.”
“Why do you listen to it then?”
“The off button broke three months ago. I tried to get rid of it, but it seems to include a user specific lost and found enchantment.”
“Meaning…?”
“I threw it out and it ended up in my pocket again the next day. Then I gave it to Steve and he sold it to Bobbi Jo and on the second day it was back on my bedside table. Then I told Stacy that she could have it and she turned it in to the magical item constabulary and they put it in a locked vault and on Thursday of that week, I found it in my backpack. Then I took it with me when I took that train ride north and threw it off the cliffs at Ragnaroon. I actually saw the thing shatter on the rocks and wash away. I found it in one of my freshly laundered socks when I got back home. Then…”
“I get the idea.”
