Hero's Chronicles

The Alpha

We’ve all had that moment. One minute you think you’re getting something for a great deal, and the next you’re contemplating all your life choices up to now. Or in my case, my first life choice. Well, aside from all the customization options that I went through. And the dozens of godpower that I spent getting them. Hey, a goddess should be able to choose what she looks like without feeling the dismissive gazes of other deities! If I wanted to be a golden red dragon the size of the World’s Apex then I can! And can pay whatever price I want!

Of course, time is godpower, so I spent quite a bit of it tailoring my appearance to my liking. But it was well worth it. I just had to spend the next millennia or so gathering up more GP to spend on my next big accomplishment as a goddess: My own hero. And let me tell you, I had the perfect idea for one. Red scales, tall and lean… She would be perfect! A beautiful dragonkin for the beautiful Dragon Queen. She would spread my influence all around Godville and increase my GP production a thousand fold! Or at least, that was my hope.

My problems first began when I saw a news article in the Godville Times. (Which, by the way, is a great newspaper if you haven’t read it.) My eye was drawn to a curious little advertisement:

Discounted Heroes available at Godville!

Need a hero, but don’t have all that godpower quite invested yet? Ask your local clergyman about discount options today!

Initially I was quite excited. Could I have acquired enough GP for a hero after all? This could be just the break I was looking for! I rushed to call up the Godville priests to inquire about these discounts… and was immediately put into a waiting list for my call. Oh well. I can afford to wait a few more millennia if need be. I would soon get my very own heroine. My thoughts, however, would be changed quite quickly on this matter.

The Sham

As I waited in my long queue, I wrote up all the characteristics that I wanted on my heroine and sorted them into groups of most and least importance. Having a discount would surely mean that I’d have to give up certain customization options, so this was a good time to sort through them all. My top priority characteristics were: Red, Draconic, and Beautiful. And, well, female, but that’s an easy thing that they shouldn’t disallow. That’s just basics.

Eventually, after my 53rd game of Solitaire, my call went through. “Perfect,” I thought to myself, “It’s time.” But the conversation on the other end threw me off guard.

“Name?”

Name? My name? Her name? Shoot, did I even think of a name in all this time?

“Your name, please?”

Oh, my name. Okay, I suppose I should think of names for my heroine quickly. “My name is Kastren, the Dragon-”

“Gender?”

Gender?? Are you asking about my own or my heroine?? And what’s with that blasie attitude I’m hearing?! “I’m… female.”

“Hero name?”

Alright, this is it. This is the moment I’ve been waiting for. Time to make my heroine!

“Hero name…?”

“Yes yes, I heard you. Her name will be… Vi… Vil… Vila…tia! Vilatia.”

“…Hero gender-?”

“Female.” And now for my list of attributes. “I would-”

“Your heroine will be processed and sent to you within three business days. Have a nice day. Beep!

I stared at my notes, thinking about a lot of things at that moment. The first, of course, was the fact that he hung up on me. He just hung up on me! Who would do that?? And he didn’t even give me a chance to ask for a few custom touches for her?! I spent all my GP on this?!

I let out my frustrations for a few minutes. It was a mess that I didn’t appreciate cleaning up afterwards, but there was little else I could do at the time. I was just so furious! A random heroine will be dropped off at the resurrection site in Godville and she’ll be told she belongs to me. What if she’s ugly? What if she has a disease? Worst of all, what if she was a human? I see human heroes all around Godville, and they’re constantly being babysat by their deities. Having to babysit is not something the Queen of Dragons should have to do! And to top it all off, I spent all of my GP getting her. I can’t get that back without waiting a few hundred more millennia!

But what was done was done. I wanted a heroine, and I took a shortcut to get her. This is the price I pay for trusting advertisements.

The Beta

I sat in my extra-dimensional space and kept a close eye on Godville’s resurrection site. I didn’t know when she would be summoned into existence, or if she just had to arrive there from whatever holding cell they kept her in. Either way, it was terrifying. My mind raced at the possible outcomes of heroines I could be stuck with. And with all those other gods that also used this cheap method, I had an excruciating amount of time to think on it.

Heroes and heroines alike stepped out from the site. Some looked fresh and new, others had high quality gear. And there were a couple of heroes that came out looking like they needed a few more hours resurrecting. None of them were mine. The anticipation had already killed me and I was just waiting for this to be over with.

What is taking her so long? Did another deity take her by mistake? Or perhaps the resurrection site is a bit backed up at the moment? I wanted to ask, but I never got around to it. If they really are busy, then asking them about something wouldn’t help. And maybe she’ll be here any minute now, and I’d seem like an impatient goddess if I went in and asked right before she came out.

I sighed and simply spent my time hero watching. It was amusing to see what quirks other deities’ heroes got stuck with. Many went to the tavern to get their drinks. A few started spending money on things they didn’t need. But there was one heroine that seemed to stand out in the crowds. I wasn’t sure why, but she caught my eye and I couldn’t look away.

She was a mousy little thing. Her clothes were quite basic, her appearance homely, and her red hair was parted haphazardly. She seemed to aimlessly wander about the streets, not having a set destination in mind. Like she was lost. I knew that, inevitably, some deities abandoned their heroes and left them to live on their own. Even if I despised the idiotic human heroes, I still felt a little compassion to those who’ve been abandoned. They can barely fend for themselves, you know.

I kept watching this girl wander to and fro, drifting between the tavern, the resurrection site, the market. Where is her deity? I wondered. Are they asleep? Was she abandoned? I sighed. There are many of those out there. I couldn’t really figure out why I obsessed over this simple heroine over the countless others out there. That was until she did something I never had once anticipated.

As if she felt my breath against her cheek, she suddenly turned around and looked at me. At first I thought I was simply occupying the same space as a rainbow, or a large bird. But then a large, cheerful grin spread across her lips. And she uttered a simple phrase that brought me crashing down back to reality.

“My Lady! You finally found me!”

The Horror

My Lady?

I stared at her for a solid few seconds. She’s not referring to me, is she? Clearly there’s some mistake here. I did a quick scan of my immediate surroundings to make sure no one was behind me. I even moved around slightly to see if her gaze followed me.

No, she’s definitely looking right at me. This… this can’t be right! This hairless ape cannot be my heroine!

As if she wasn’t bothered by the her current situation, she tilted her head at me. “My Lady? Can you not hear me?” Then, in an idiotic display, she climbed onto a bench and waved her hands wildly at me, drawing a few looks from the crowds. “HELLOOO! YOUR GRACE! I’M DOWN HERE!”

“I can clearly hear you and see you. Dismount from that public bench at once.”

She giddily wriggled in place, ignoring my very first command given to her. “Ooh, I’m so excited! They told me you would meet me by the resurrection site, and here you finally are! I’m ready to be your-”

“I said get off that bench! You’re making a scene!”

As though she were finally having her senses awakened, she looked around with wide eyes and quickly hopped off the bench. “Oh, right… They also said that only I could talk to you…”

“Nevermind that now. You say you are my heroine? You are Vilatia?”

She grinned and looked at me with those stupid eyes again. “Yes! That’s my name! They said you’d know my name, My Lady! Although… I’m afraid they didn’t tell me yours.”

Bah. She doesn’t deserve to know that. “Just know that I am your Queen. Call me anything fitting for such a title and we’ll manage.”

“Oh, okay! Wow, I must be special to work under a Queen goddess… Um, what is your first request, My Lady?”

I snorted, which somehow blew air past that runt’s red locks and nothing else. “My first request was that you got off the bench. However, your next assignment is to gather up golden bricks to make up my temple. I’ll need it if I am to grow stronger.”

“Ooh… A golden brick temple? That sounds hard…” She played with her hair as she glanced down at her little feet. Obviously she was trying to think her way through the processes with her flawed human brain.

“Then you best get started. I’ll leave you to figure out the details. You know your strengths.”

She looked up at me with an odd expression. It was as though a child were looking up at their parent for guidance that they’d fear they wouldn’t receive. “You’re leaving?”

“Of course not. I’ll still be with you. But communicating this way is tiring for me, and I need to stop before I expend too much power. If you need anything, just say so and I’ll try to respond.” I, of course, wouldn’t respond to everything. I will not micromanage her. That would be much more taxing.

“Oh… But respond how-?”

“Good day, champion.” With those words, I retreated back into my divine space to recoup and gather my thoughts.

“I have a champion now. And she’s the worst thing ever. I really shouldn’t have listened to that advertisement.”

The Diary

The next few hours were spent with me thinking of ways to keep tabs on her without actually having to see her. For one, it was a bit costly on my GP this early after my purchase. But I also just didn’t want to see her. Not that I could possibly forget that human’s face anymore. I was stuck with her as much as she was to me. Abandoning her this early is simply a waste; it’d be better to wait until I had enough to replace her.

Wait… Abandoning her? Is that really something I wanted to do? She’d fare no better than those other heroes out there that were all by themselves. Did I really wish such a horrid fate upon this child?

My mind was troubled with this dilemma. Which is probably why it took me so long to realize the obvious answer to my initial problem. Her diary! All heroes are assigned a diary when first assigned to a god. I could simply peek at whatever she writes in there and follow her movements that way. That’d hardly be taxing on my GP.

I cast my mind towards her and focused on her pages. Oh? She had already written something? Well good! I focused on the entry.

Diary,

I finally met my goddess! She was truly a sight to behold. And she gave me a really tough task. I don’t know if I’ll be up to it yet, so I’m headed to that tavern nearby to see if there are any clues to help me. And so I can find inspiration on what I should call you as well! I hope you like whatever I pick.

I groaned. The tavern…? Already? Really?! Is she that clueless that she has to head to such a place like that?

There wasn’t really much I could do about it, though. My GP was spent. I just had to hope that she didn’t take too long in there.

Diary,

I found a quest the bartender said could help me achieve my goals! He said it had something to do with killing monsters and to sweat the small stuff. Sounds scary, but if I have to do it for My Lady, then I will! She’ll keep me safe, right?

Well that was fast. Seems she’s not so dull after all. I did worry about her encountering those monsters, though. She hadn’t any equipment, or even experience fighting after all. I might have to fulfill her wish to protect her during those weak times… At least until she got better. I couldn’t use up all my GP after all.

Day One, I think

I mean, it’s definitely Day One of being a heroine, right? I can’t seem to remember anything really before being on that “resurrection site” place. But I’m not a baby… right?

That’s what was going on in my head as I started out my quest. I knew what my purpose was, but I found myself wondering what it was before I found My Lady. Or, before she found me. Before the priests found me…? Wait, was I even “found-?”

THWIP!

I froze as my mind also froze. Danger sound. That’s all I could think at the moment. My heart started beating like those… drum people. Um, a drumist? Wait, not important, there was danger! I turned to face my opponent, and it’s… some guy that was already fighting something.

I quickly hid behind the tree he struck and watched him. Looks like he didn’t notice me and simply almost hit me with a stray arrow. Whew, close one. He should watch where he attacks. Someone could have gotten-

C-CRASH!

I squealed and ran out of there as I felt my hair stand on end. Arrows and lightning bolts? I should not mess with that guy! Or whatever he was fighting! It was bad news! Good thing running away was easy… Until I tripped and fell over some papers in the middle of the woods.

A nearby hiss caught my attention and brought me up to my feet. “Hey! I just finished organizing those!”

I looked around nervously, fearing the worst. Oh no, please don’t tell me I upset a monster, I don’t want to fight one yet, I’m not ready-

Then a cute little cat pounced out of some bushes towards the papers. “Oh, well if it isn’t another hero… Just great.” He batted at the papers strewn about, trying to pile them back together.

“Um… S-sorry…? You really shouldn’t keep those-”

He turned to glare at me and hissed again. “Sorry won’t cut it, missy!” I noticed his tail flick around a little and his eyes seemed to get bigger… or wider? “Wait… You’re not a new heroine, are you? You smell different than most I come across.”

Confused, I quickly checked my scent. “Uh, yeah… This is my first quest.” I smell funny?

I heard him purr, which made him really cute and snuggly looking. “Ooh… This is something new to document.” He then started to paw at some papers in another stack. “Ah, when we fight, could you let me pause occasionally to write notes down for later?”

My nervousness came back. “Wait, fight?”

“Yes, fight…! You’re a heroine. I’m a monster. It’s kinda the whole deal of this place, remember?”

“Y-you’re a monster?! But you look like such a cute kitty!” I’m going to have to fight him?!

He growled at me, which I thought was just a dog thing but apparently not. “I am NOT cute! Burearu-Cats are not ‘cute kitties!’”

I was terrified. Here I was, face to face with an actual monster, and I had nothing to kill it with. Or anything to protect myself with. It had claws while I had fists. And even if it was completely on board with killing me, he still seemed soo cute… How could I willingly hurt this kitty-

The Bureau-Cat lunged for my leg and started clawing at me.

“Ow! Meanie!” I punched its head hard to get it back for that.

He rolled off and dashed back to his papers as he pulled out a pen. “Ooh, exciting…! New heroines will use their fists in lieu of a suitable weapon…’”

That cat made me really mad. I didn’t have a problem killing it after that.

To be continued… eventually
