Hero's Chronicles

The Golden Acorn (Act 3) Infinite Circle

The Forgotten1 was awakened by beams of multicolored sunlight shining through the brightly painted leaves of Dari’s red oak. He turned and saw Dari speaking to Angelica in the stream nearby. Scruffy was sitting on a boulder, in the middle of the stream, eating crayfish. A trout was laid on a stone near the fire, no doubt for his breakfast.

The Forgotten1 walked to the water’s edge and said “Good morning Angelica and Dari. Scruffy and I plan to stop by Godvillewood before returning to the glade.”

“That’s not a good idea for many reasons,” Angelica replied. “First, Scruffy is a monster not a pet and someone may notice. Second…”

The Forgotten1 interrupted, “I have thought of most of the reasons you can list and Scruffy and I have discussed them. We have a closer relationship than most “heroes":http://wiki.godvillegame.com/Hero have with their pets and I’m certain no one will notice.”

Angelica asked, “Why do you really want to go?”

“I need a beer.”

“You need a beer or you want a beer? You’ve been at the glade an awful long time to need a beer. What is it with you heroes and beer anyway?”

“Okay, I want a beer, I really miss it. Beer makes us more intelligent, boosts our confidence, helps us see clearer, lowers our blood pressure, improves our kidneys and keeps our bones strong.”

“I’m not sure some of those are the benefits you make them out to be. I doubt I’m going to dissuade you from going. Would you consider leaving Scruffy behind with me?”

“I’m okay with him staying behind but he seems determined to go and keep me safe”.

“I’m certain he feels that way. I’ll give you one night in town then I’m returning to my lake. If you’re not out of town by then, I’ll have to let Darla and Silky know where you’ve gone.”

“I’d only planned to spend one night in town anyway. Hopefully, they’ll never know we went.”

Dari, who had been silent during the discussion, asked Angelica “What’s beer.”

“Beer is an alcoholic beverage produced by the saccharification of starch and fermentation of the resulting sugar through a process called brewing. In moderation, beer has some benefits. However, I have never heard of a “hero":http://wiki.godvillegame.com/Hero that could drink beer in moderation.”

“Interesting, perhaps I should go along and experience beer.”

“No, it’s best if you stay here and watch after Diro.” Angelica was thinking, “There’s no way I could let her see a city even Godvillewood. The destruction of trees alone would probably kill her much less what a hero might do to her.”

Angelica went over to Scruffy and asked “Are you certain you want to go into a city?”

“Yes. The Forgotten1 is determined to go and I promised to protect him.”

“I asked if you wanted to go into a city not if you were going to protect the Forgotten1.”

“It’ll be exciting to see where “heroes":http://wiki.godvillegame.com/Hero hang out and what they do when they’re not terrorizing everyone.”

“I’m not in favor of this but if you insist on going, take this,” Angelica said and handed Scruffy two small pearls. Beer’s very intoxicating and after so long, he’s certain to overindulge and get very drunk. If you get in trouble shove this in his mouth. He’ll sober up quickly and hopefully the two of you will be able to return safely.”

“Thanks, I’ll take them but I don’t think we’ll need them.”

“Let’s hope not.”

She knew he’d wander around lost for hours, possibly days, so Angelica gave the Forgotten1 directions to Godvillewood. You’ll be there this afternoon and I’ll meet you a milepost downstream tomorrow. Normally, I don’t go near any town but I’ll be there for Darla and Silky. This is a very bad idea and I want them to know where you went if you don’t return.”

“Thanks for the directions. We’ll be careful. I only want to have a beer or two and then we’ll return.”

The Forgotten1 and Scruffy followed the landmarks Angelica had given them when they stumbled across the path. They turned at the first right fork of the stream, after the third quartz boulder on the left, then crossed the river on a rope bridge, found a straight narrow path and headed towards Godvillewood. Before long they began to see an occasional tourist or a forester dragging their axes back to town.

As a cart filled with charcoal passed, they heard a squeal and a heroine leapt from the rear of a cart and hugged Scruffy. The Forgotten1 recognized her instantly. She was the heroine they had tried to save.

Stepping away from Scruffy, the heroine turned to the Forgotten1 and said “Hi, my name is Boleyn. I really appreciated your pet’s attempt to assist me with the lightsaber toothed tigers

“But you were dead?”

“Oh that. My god Iduna was a fighting with her sister Epona Dernhelm, and didn’t resurrect me until she remembered I had been screaming for her help. Anyway, join me and I’ll buy you a beer.”

“We’d love to.”

As they approached Godvillewood, Scruffy stopped and looked in amazement at the graveyard just outside the city gates. Boleyn said, “Don’t worry they only rise once a year but no one knows when until it happens” She brushed by the guard with a wink and a twinkle in her eye. He was so surprised he forgot to ask for the party’s toll.

They passed street vendors who sold jewelry, sweetmeats and trinkets, as Boleyn led them to the largest tavern in town. The lighting was muted and couples cuddled and traded sweet nothing at the rear of the tavern.

Out of nowhere an empty bottle flew by Boleyn’s head and smashed on the wall beside the door. She looked to see where it came from and spotted Iduna and Epona Dernhelm fighting. With a screech, she darted across the room and jumped on her counterpart Mearas. The Forgotten1 and Scruffy were shocked. Their new friend and her sister were biting, scratching and pulling each others hair.

A beautiful maiden stood and casually grabbed the heroines by their ears, twisted them sharply and pulled the two apart. The sisters realized it was the god Katie Scarlett and quickly settled down. Katie Scarlett then grabbed Iduna and Epona Dernhelm and pulled them apart. She gave the pair a stern look and said, “That better be the end of it for today.

Who are your guests Boleyn

“This is the Forgotten1 and Scruffy. They helped me with a spot of trouble with some lightsaber toothed tigers

“Do tell,” Katie Scarlett said in her sweetest, honey laden, lilac flavored voice. She then ordered a round of beer for everyone.

“Well, you know who, wasn’t paying much attention and I was attacked by a pair of lightsaber toothed tigers. I tried to make it to a cave but died before I could get there. When, you know who, remembered I had been screaming for help and woke me up. I saw Scruffy sitting there looking at my beautiful features…”

“Humph.”

“Okay, okay. Scruffy watched to make sure the pair didn’t come to drag my beautiful body off and chew on it. Just as I got to my feet, the pair attacked. Scruffy and I went into action. I smashed one with my mace of spades and Scruffy ripped fur from the face of the other. The one Scruffy fought turned tail and ran. He followed it. I stumbled, screamed for, you know who’s, help, but she wasn’t there.

Sparks danced across her knuckles, as Iduna asked “Are you talking about me, by chance.”

“Not now,” Katie Scarlett said. She realized the Forgotten1 had finished both his and Scruffy’s beers and ordered two more.

Boleyn continued, “As I fell, I bashed the lightsaber toothed tiger between the eyes. I watched it drag itself off with blood running from its ears before I blacked out.”

Katie Scarlett looked at the Forgotten1 and said, “That’s quite a pet you have there. It’s not every day a heroes pet will help another in need. As a matter of fact, it’s very unusual indeed.”

The Forgotten1 replied, “Yes he’s quite special and we have a very unique relationship.”

The Forgotten1 continued the story, “After stumbling over both Boleyn and one of the lightsaber toothed tigers, I arrived to see the remaining lightsaber toothed tiger and Scruffy in fierce combat. Scruffy had ragged strips of skin hanging from his side and the lightsaber toothed tiger

The Forgotten1” saw the sour look on Scruffy’s face and stopped briefly. “Oh, I had forgotten. The first time you drink beer the flavor is quite awful. Given time it will become a flavor that’s almost as great as your passion for Silky.”

As he slid his beer over to the *Forgotten1
, the look on Scruffy’s face said it all “Never again.”

Picking up the story where he left off, the Forgotten1 continued “I bashed the remaining lightsaber toothed tiger behind the head with my bi-sickle’s blade which severed its spinal cord. I continued to smash it in the head, long after it died, until the bi-sickle’s blade shattered. Realizing Scruffy was severely injured, I asked a friend for some help.”

“I’d really like to meet your friend sometime.”

The Forgotten1 not knowing what to say so took a long drink from his beer.

Katie Scarlett stood, looked at the sisters and said, “It’s time we prepared for this week’s play. It was a real pleasure to have met you. I hope we see each other again”.

She ordered the Forgotten1 a beer and sashayed across the bar. A cool breeze scented with honey suckle, fresh rain, and magnolia blossoms followed in her wake.

Finally alone, Scruffy said, “I think you’ve had enough beer.”

“Let me finish this one,” the Forgotten1 said as he slid to the floor.

To be continued…

I know they’re too long but it’s hard to stop

“The University – Part 13”

It was becoming more difficult to put up with the antics of the hero every day. One would think loyalty, trust and protection would be honored not abused. Instead he’d been tied up on a leash so short that he could barely lie down. It was a long cold night and he was freezing. His nose was so cold his normally awesome sense of smell was gone.

Inside the tavern the hero was dragging himself out from under the counter after a long night of celebration. Finally pulling himself up on a barstool, he reached for his pouch and hoped he had enough coin left to buy a beer to start the day with. “Where’s my pouch?” he thought once he realized it wasn’t there.

He leaned down and to look under the counter and fell face first onto the floor. Dazed, he looked around but he couldn’t see his pouch. Spotting a shiny object under the far corner of the counter, he dragged himself over to it on his hands and knees. He’d found a gold coin. Thinking to himself, “Well it’s a start and perhaps I tipped the bartender well and a gold coin and a smile will get me a beer,” he crawled out and dragged himself up on the barstool again. Grinning at the bartender, he slapped the gold coin on the counter and asked for a beer.

The bartender, hearing a gold coin hit the counter, turned and looked over to see what had been the life of the party the night before slouched over the bar with a stupid grin on his face. A single gold coin lay on the counter in front of him. The bartender pulled a tankard of beer from a large barrel and slowly walked the length of the counter to where he sat. As she set the tankard in front of him and pocketed the gold coin, the bartender smiled and said “Thanks for all the tips last night.”

As the hero chugged the beer, he tried to recall the previous day. He did recall winning an extended battle in the arena. The audience had been so pleased by the battle and his display of skill they’d rained gold coins down on the field. He’d gathered them up while his opponent was still knocked out. He recalled leaving a few gold coins so his opponent would think the audience had only thrown a few. In fact, there’d been so many gold coins his pouch had almost been overflowing.

Then there was that barrage of lightning strikes his god had rained down to honor him after the battle. He’d somehow avoided the majority of them but there’d been one bolt that’d struck his pouch and he recalled a gold brick falling out on his toe. After cursing a bit, he’d picked it up and taken it over to the temple to be used in the back wall he was constructing. Some pilgrims had stopped by the temple and left a few gold coins on the altar and he’d put those in the pouch also. He remembered not having many items to sell and that the trader had talked him out of two of them by offering a fifty percent discount the next time he stopped in.

“What next?” he thought. The beer running down his chin reminded him it’d been the tavern. Finally the haze was beginning to lift and he could remember seeing three of the most beautiful goddesses he’d ever seen sitting together at one of the tables. There were the sisters Epona Dernhelm and Iduna who’d made their love for each other evident in every verbal barb they’d thrown. And then there’d been Katie Scarlett, a true Southern Belle. He remembered buying her a Mint Julip and the soft honey laden sound of her voice as she said, “Thank you.” Who could forget the smell of magnolias and lilacs that surrounded her, her long flowing hair and those eyes? Had it not been for the bartender asking if he’d like another, he’d probably still be lost in that vision of loveliness.

“I’d love another but I can’t seem to find my pouch,” he said.

“Oh, I forgot. When you passed out and slid under the bar, your friends took it. The said they were taking it over to the sowing Sun guild hall and you could pick it up there.”

“I’m not a member of sowing Sun and I don’t recall agreeing to that,” the hero said.

“I’m pretty sure they saved you from being robbed and you should thank them for caring.”

“Thanks,” the hero said as he started toward the front doors.

“Wait! You left your pet tied up out back. Don’t you want to check on it?”

Stumbling out the back door of the tavern, the hero untied Sparks and waited as he rushed into the bushes…
